The master schedule, also called the master production schedule, is a statement of what the company expects to manufacture. If a company uses the MRP (Material Requirements Planning) package, the master schedule drives the MRP; that is, the orders from the Master Scheduling package are the highest level requirements, from which all lower level requirements are generated.
The master schedule is kept on file in a bucketless format by exact due date for each entry in the schedule. This allows exact, correctly dated requirements to be used for material requirements planning, but does not preclude the use of a period or bucket format for reporting purposes.
